Art Walk And Art Garden In San Jose Del Cabo

Los Cabos is a haven for artists and artisans. Whether in Todos Santos, Cabo San Lucas or San Jose del Cabo, there are galleries, local artisan shops and events that celebrate art. During the season, one of the most popular is Thursday evening's Art Garden and Art Walk in the plaza and Art District in San Jose del Cabo. Every Thursday the galleries in the Art District open their doors, often hosting the artists for visitors to have the opportunity to meet them and see their work. The central plaza (Plaza Mijares) and the streets of the Art District also are filled with artists displaying their paintings, sculptures, jewelry, and handmade artisanal products. These events showcase a variety of styles from impressionist to surrealistic to landscapes and ultra-modern art. There is something for every taste.

Beside the Mission of San Jose del Cabo is Hernandez store featuring Huichol artwork and other items. Huichol is the traditional Mexican bead work that features a wide range of traditional symbols, animals, plants and reptiles that are part of the Mexican culture. During our visit to the store, an artisan was busy at work converting a Clase Azul tequila bottle into a piece of Huichol art. There were several other bottles that had already been finished, were on display and stunning. I asked how long it would take for the artist to finish one of the bottles and was told that it took about three full days of detailed work to create Huichol art on the bottle. The gallery/store also displayed a range of pottery and ceramic art as well as full sized paintings and some jewelry. True worth the visit.

Walking down the main street in the Art District, visitors have the opportunity to see paintings, sculpture, photography and jewelry of better known national and international artists. Not only does the Art District offer this wide selection of artists but there are many great restaurants. So it is possible to enjoy an evening of food, drink and art all in one small area of San Jose del Cabo.
